I have the rare privilege of a job with very flexible working conditions, and I always loved working from home. Pre-pandemic and post-nursery, I wouldn’t normally come in on more than three, maybe four days per week.
However, the pandemic had a lasting effect on my working habits. I developed a strange longing for my office on campus. This isn’t (just) about seeing more of my colleagues; rather, my ability to work from home somehow suffered. There are just too many distractions, which was never a problem in the almost 30 years before.
And so, I developed the strange habit of coming in on Fridays, when nearly everyone else is working from home, particularly during the break. Having the whole department to myself on a Friday afternoon is an eerie luxury. It is very calming. Also, it reminds me of my PhD student days. As in playing Doom, naturally.

When I posted this on Mastodon, Paul Drye sent me back this image. Made me chuckle, but I also locked my door.
